Push up is a common calisthenics exercise performed in a prone position by raising and lowering the body using the arms.
This exercise improve the strenght of pectoral muscles, triceps and deltoids and in particular the anterior deltoids.
This kind of exercises is also made in the military physical training, and furthermore are used as punishment.
During this exercise the subjects support the 69% of their body mass in the up position and 75% in the down position, this values change when the subject do this exercise on his knees(53% in the up position and 62% in the down position).
